How To Tackle Dry Skin Using A Moisturiser

To help to tackle dry skin, beauty expert Sarah outlines six ways to improve your condition. You generally experience this feeling when the skin feels unnaturally tight and the pores seem blocked or closed.

1. Step 1: How do you notice?

The most effective way of understanding if you have excessive dry skin or combination skin is to ask yourself after you have washed whether your skin feels tight and uncomfortable. Dry skin occurs from skin lacking in natural oils, whereas dehydrated skin happens through lack of drinking water.

2. Step 2: Cleaning the surface of the skin

Use a milk or cream cleanser on your face, avoiding the harsh effects of soap with causes dryness. After massaging in the skin, you have to remove using a damp piece of cotton wool and wash off the remaining with tap water. Tests have shown that using a toner can have a drying effect on the skin. For the benefit of your skin, it would be wise to avoid excessive alcohol intake.

3. Step 3: Daily Moisturising

It is important to use a good moisturiser each and every day using for example the recommended ‘Maximum Moisturiser Day Cream’ manufactured by Elemis – which leaves your skin feeling soft.

4. Step 4: Moisturing at night

At the end of the day, your skin will benefit from gentle washing. If your choice is to take a bath or taking a shower – then it is no problem. Whichever way you prefer, make sure that the water is not piping hot causing chaffing and ultimately cracked skin. Once clean, add the moisturising cream gently around the face and eyes – a product to try would be ‘Nutrative Repair Night Cream’ manufactured by Gatineau.

5. Step 5: Exfoliating

The skin may feel rough when touched this is due to a natural buildup of dead skin cells. At least twice a week, try to exfoliate the skin to rid it of dead skin cells. Use an exfoliator such as ‘Gentle Rose Exfoliator’ by Elemis, or the excellent ‘Rose Hydrating Face Mask’ by Aromatherapy Associates.

6. Step 6: Diet and Lifestyle

Dry skin is normally as a result of the lack of natural oil (sebum). Ensure that your diet contains elements that help to replenish the natural levels of oil; including oily fish such as mackerel and salmon, or taking omega supplements. The consumption of water is important, particularly during the day at work. Each day try to ensure that you drink in the region of 2 litres of water per day.

Skin Care For Combination Skin Types

Many people have a skin problem that one minute is excessively oily and the next very dry. The remedy for this solution can be found in a night cream specially made for combination skin types. There are several formulas available that are effective in keeping the moisture levels in your skin totally balanced, but finding them is the problem.

It is perfectly natural that some people will need help to locate their perfect formula for treating personal skin issues. It isn’t wise to rely on what the cosmetic companies try to tell you in their expensive TV or print advertisements. The reason for this is that the companies responsible are often selling low quality products with limited effectiveness. One product range that uses natural products to control sebum production is Elemis.

There is evidence to suggest that cosmetic companies often spend more on advertising their products rather than development and research into the product’s effectiveness. Generally it is all about front and promotion, and little attention is given to whether it actually works or not. You will be amazed by how little benefit these formulas actually provide your skin.

Most skin care products bought from high street retailers are made from chemicals and are littered with synthetics rather than natural ingredients that should be in place. The problem with using synthetic compounds is that they do not use the nutrients or antioxidants that are needed for the health of the skin. What actually happens is that the chemicals threaten to harm your skin.

A restorative night cream for combination skin or dry skin care that features chemical agents in lieu of fresh, natural compounds could eventually cause you to become seriously ill. Some of the chemicals included in these cosmetic products actually contain elements that are carginogenic and contain toxins. The problem with these chemicals is that the body cannot process them, instead stores them in soft tissue.

How to make your skin look great without exposure to harmful UV

The moment arrives when you read that invitation to a wedding or party that has appeared on the mat, and you have a stare into the mirror and jump back with anguish. Who is this individual with the pasty-face who stares back at me, with no colour to speak of? We are not all the English rose type with perfect pale skin, so there is nothing wrong with a pale complexion.

So what are the alternatives to consider that will improve your skincare, and give you that ‘just returned from a holiday look?

Exercise

The ideal way to achieve that look of skin perfection, is to start an exercise programme or intensify an existing one. Good skin condition can be attributed to a regular exercise routine, as exercise has never really hurt anyone. Along with exercise, it is important to replenish the body with the water that will be lost through evaporation. Water is the single most important mineral that the body needs for the production of healthy skin cells. Regularly drink as much water as possible, and the results on your skin will be evident!

False tan

Above I have mentioned natural ways to improve the quality and appearance of your skin, which should be in place to underpin the next step of the process. Unless you have a holiday planned to coincide with the time of the ‘event’, it is not going to be possible to gain that bronzed effect that you desire without subjecting you skin to sunbed treatment. This may well be a reasonable route to take, but it has to be used with caution because of the harmful UV rays.

Perhaps the best route to take is the use of the Sun laboratories technique, which is one of the best spray tanning systems on the market. The results are very good, with an even coating that lasts for several days. This is best used with a quality moisturiser like Elemis, which has an anti-ageing property and is created from natural products.

Looking after your skin this winter

It is advisable to employ a certain type of skin care routine during the year. But in this case, you skin care routine should be twice as extensive due to the exposure of cold and hot temperatures. In order to protect your skin against the elements during the winter months, you need to be doing more than the basics.

The suggestion and help guide for providing nourishment and protection for your skin during extreme temperatures can be found below. It is quite common to neglect your skin during this part of the year, but you can’t complain if the cracks begin to appear.

In order to promote good winter habits, practical things that help to protect the skin can be used. It begins however with skin care preparation. Actions like moisturizing more frequently with products like Elemis Pro Collagen Marine Cream and taking warm showers, rather than piping hot showers. The winter skin care advice below is actually a check list to boost your winter skin care regimen and make it more effective:

  • Keep a handy supply of pure Vitamin E, organic Lip Butter or Lip Balm
  • Buy products that contain essential oils such as Aromatherapy Associates versus fragrance oils which contain a mix of unknown chemicals that encourage your skin to become dehydrated
  • Purchase gel cleansers for cleaning your face and/or body. Foam cleansers are to be avoided because they have a habit of removing the natural oils present in the skin.
  • Make sure that you have a good supply of cotton underwear (100%) which include your socks, as this will allow the free circulation of air, whilst woollen sweater will help to maintain the layer of warm air close to the body surface.
  • When you buy skin care products, ensure that they don’t contain any alcohol
  • Add Flax seed oil to your diet as it encourages internal hydration along with other benefits to your health and well being.
  • It is recommended that you buy a humidifier or ask for one for Christmas. The humidifier would replenish the moisture in the air that has been removed by the central heating system.
  • Treat yourself to some light tanning treatment at the Sun laboratories to give your skin a healthy glow.
